All art is second-hand, as much as any other object placed into the realm of commodities. The making of an object entails its actual consumption, as being made and being used are twin conditions. From extraction to consumption, the object stands as an entity moved across social classes by needs, desires, and return policies. Cave paintings witnessed art being birthed out of the betrayal of the native function of the object (tool): the spear used for hunting then misused for carving shapes on a surface. From puncturing the object of desire to puncturing its visual representation and back. The stability of the (art) object is bound to the acts it induces on the virtually expanding conveyer belt. What is bought at the cart’s checkout? The soft currency of proximity: the shrinking of time and distance compressed into the presence of an item. The spoon reaches the mouth. The prosumeristic effort of a long distance love call.
